Short-Term Faculty-Led Course

Merrimack Global Course

Streets of DubaiCOM 4450 Global Media: Emerging Culture and Information Industries in the Arab World
Since the early days of Hollywood, U.S. media has dominated the global marketplace, inundating other countries and cultures with American-made films, television programs, songs, and other cultural texts. However, emerging media capitals are emerging around the world that challenge the United States' media hegemony.

This course will be an in-depth, immersive case study of the production culture, media texts, and audience practices in the emerging media capital of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. We will consider Arab media industries in relation to globalization by examining the news, advertising, broadcasting, cinema, and new media. We will think about the way government regulation, state intervention, politics, technology, and social liberalism impact both the amount and kinds of content circulated throughout the Arab world and beyond. Finally, we will immerse ourselves in the media environment of Dubai, talk to media creators in the industry, and tour media production facilities in Dubai Media City in order to see theories and concepts in practice.

This is a WINTER INTENSIVE course that begins with meetings and required preparatory work in December 2018. The on-site intensive in Dubai begins Friday, December 28 (fly to Dubai, arrive Saturday, December 29). The course finishes on-site Sunday, January 13, 2019.

Course Fulfills:
  • Experiential [X] or Diversity [D] in Liberal Studies Core Curriculum
