Semester Program

rabat housingA semester at Rabat, Morocco's Language + Culture program is ideal for students with strong interests in Arabic and French languages, as well as Moroccan studies, culture, religion, business and economics, and literature.  Rabat is Morocco’s capital and second-largest city. With a population of 3 million, it’s home to the country’s most prestigious universities, as well as international institutions like UNESCO and the World Bank.

Put your coursework in context and practice new language skills with visits to markets, cultural sites, and music and theatre performances. Explore Rabat’s ancient medina and Kasbah, and visit sites like the ancient ruins of Challah, the Andalucian Gardens. See how local schools and government agencies operate.

SERVICE LEARNING: Get to know the Rabat community by helping refugees, immigrants, women or children.

INTERNSHIPS: Positions with NGOs and private institutions can be arranged in advance for eligible academic-year students.

Courses and Credits

Area studies courses and language courses are held at the CIEE Study Center in Rabat. In addition to coursework, students can participate in internship and volunteer opportunities.
FIRST TWO WEEKS: All students take Intensive Moroccan Colloquial Arabic.
ACADEMIC SESSION: All students enroll in Modern Standard Arabic, and choose 3 elective courses. Students interested in advancing their language skills may enroll in the Moroccan Colloquial Arabic course as one elective.

For course listing and syllabi, go to the Rabat, Language + Culture Program page and scroll to Curriculum (under ACADEMICS) at the bottom.

If you would like to get a course approved, print off the form NEW GEO Course approval form.pdf. Take the completed form and syllabus to the appropriate department chair. Make sure that you return that course approval form and syllabus to the GEO.

TRANSFERRING OF CREDITS: All credits taken abroad come back as transfer credits. Grades will be reflected on the transcript, but not figured into the student's cumulative GPA. Students must earn a 'C' or above for credits to transfer to Merrimack. Please note carefully that most of the courses taken abroad are only 3-credits rather than 4 as at Merrimack.
