Of the many qualities required for a student's strong academic experience abroad, perhaps the three most important are: independence, initiative, and resilience. In the Office of Global Education, we see the whole application and pre-departure process as an opportunity for them to begin refining these qualities. For this reason, we will always communicate with your student. We are happy to answer questions and discuss these opportunities with parents, but students are the ones going abroad, and we encourage you to help them step into this new stage by having conversations with them about the following:
  • Their academic goals for their time abroad
  • Their professional goals long term and how they see this experience contributing to those goals
  • Their personal health and well being and what time abroad might mean for them
These are the same conversations we will be having with your student, but it helps if they are challenged by you as well.
