You’ll have access to courses in creative intelligence and innovation, engineering, information technology, science, education, design and much more!

VOLUNTEER-  UTS provides their students with opportunities to engage with the community through volunteer and service learning.

Courses and Credits

Students at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) program are recommended to take 16 academic credits for the semester. As a CAPA student, you’ll have access to a state-of-the-art facility that includes a 3D data visualization arena, a software design studio, a library with highly sophisticated robotic retrieval system, computer and science labs, research centers, and study areas –all equipped with innovative technologies to facilitate your learning.

UTS photo of classroom labCOURSE APPROVAL PROCESS:If you would like to get a course approved, print off the form NEW GEO Course approval form.pdf. Take the completed form and syllabus to the appropriate department chair. If you do not access your syllabus on the above site, please request a syllabus from Njideka Ofoleta at nofoleta@capa.org. Make sure that you return that course approval form and syllabus to the GEO. 

TRANSFERRING OF CREDITS: All credits taken abroad come back as transfer credits. Grades will be reflected on the transcript, but not figured into the student's cumulative GPA. Students must earn a 'C' or above for credits to transfer to Merrimack. 

Housing

HOMESTAY: Homestays provide an excellent opportunity for cultural immersion.
MEALS: Breakfast and dinner are provided in the homestay.

APARTMENTS: Shared apartments are available off-campus. Students must commute from around the city.
MEALS: Meals are not included with this option.
 
RESIDENCES: Students live on campus in international residence halls at UTS.

Costs

Merrimack students attending a CAPA semester program pay Merrimack's Global Semester costs which cover covers tuition, program costs included, housing, a transportation pass for travel on buses and trains in the central metropolitan areas for your program dates, and international insurance for the semester. 2018-2019 Fees include:
  • Global Semester costs: $24,830
  • Additional program fee: $3,300
  • Total Fees: $28,130

BILLING: Payments for the semester abroad are made to the Bursar's Office per usual. Students should discuss payment plans with the Bursar's Office. For additional billing questions, please contact the Bursar's Office: Room 12, Austin Hall, billmail@merrimack.edu,  978.837.5310.
 
FINANCIAL AID: Merrimack institutional aid is recalculated for the semester off-campus**. When students return to campus, Merrimack aid returns to the on-campus rate. We encourage you to consult the Financial Aid Office early on to see what this recalculation might mean for you. Office of Financial Aid 15B Austin Hall, financialaid@merrimack.edu, 978.837.5186.

**N.B. NCAA scholarships and Federal Aid are not affected by this recalculation.
 
ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL COSTS:
  • Air transportation to and from Sydney: $1,600 - $2,200
  • Roundtrip airport transfer: $60 - $120
  • Passport (first-time and renewal): $100 - $150
  • Visa and fees: $25 - $140
  • Texts and materials: $210 - $290
  • Meals for students living in apartments (roughly $40 per day if purchasing 3 meals): $2,000-$3,000
  • Laundry for students living in apartments (pay as you go in apartment complex): $4 wash, $4 dry/per load
  • Additional cost of lunch for homestay students (roughly $15 per day): $800-$1200
  • Additional cost for internet in homestay: $140
  • Basic Mobile phone: $50*
  • Local transportation: $80 - $150**
  • Additional cost for internet access if limit is exceeded (Urbanest apartment only): $100
* Incoming calls on most phone plans are free but if they plan on making outbound calls this will be an additional cost. On average, $50 gets you 400 texts and 100 minutes of local call time however this will vary depending on the phone carrier.
**While CAPA provides an Opal Card encompassing local transport around the city, we recommend students take licensed taxi very early in the morning/very late at night
 

Applying

Students interested in studying in a GEO program must first apply for permission to study abroad through Merrimack's Office of Global Education (GEO). To qualify Merrimack students must be:
  • Second-semester sophomores and above
  • In good academic standing with a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA
  • In good disciplinary standing 
To apply students must submit the following by March 9, 2018
  • Online application
  • Faculty reference (form included in online application)
  • Student affairs reference (form included in online application)
  • An Interview with GEO staff to be conducted soon after the application has been submitted, or during the week of March 12th.
After students have been approved by the GEO for semester's study abroad, they may proceed with CAPA's online application.
