Semester Program

Toulouse businessAt the Toulouse, France Business + Culture Program, you can study at two schools: the Toulouse Business School, one of France's top-ranked undergraduate business schools, and the Institut Catholique de Toulouse, one of the oldest private universities in the world.
Explore business, economics, history, art and art history, international affairs, and culture during university courses, and improve your French language skills.

Situated the South of France between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Toulouse offers easy access to the Atlantic, the mountains, and the Mediterranean. The fourth largest city in France, with the second largest student population in the country, Toulouse offers students the opportunity to learn about France’s past and present while experiencing life in a dynamic city.
Additional Opportunities:
INTERNSHIPS:Immerse yourself in the French work environment as you build business skills and experience the nuances of working with people from different cultures.
VOLUNTEERING: Volunteer at a food bank, women’s shelter, senior center, or local independent movie theatre, tutor children after school, or work on an organic farm.

Courses and Credits

Students in the Toulouse Business + Culture Program enroll in CIEE elective courses and direct enrollment courses taught in English at the Toulouse Business School or at the Institut Catholique de Toulouse. They also take French classes at CIEE study center. U.S. students notice striking differences between education systems. Professors in France tend to be more formal than in the United States and do not see it as their role to give encouragement or individual attention to students. As a result, French students are generally very self-disciplined.

Students are required to take the following for a total of 15-18 credits per semester:
  • One French language course
  • At least one CIEE area studies (culture) course
  • At least one CIEE business elective classes
  • Direct enrollment business electives for a combined total of 3 or 6 U.S. credits at Toulouse Business School or Institut Catholique de Toulouse

For course listing, descriptions and some syllabi, go to the Toulouse, Business + Culture Program page and scroll to Curriculum (under ACADEMICS) at the bottom. Many of the syllabi are available online here. Note carefully which courses are taught in English versus in French.

If you would like to get a course approved, print off the form NEW GEO Course approval form.pdf. Take the completed form and syllabus to the appropriate department chair. Make sure that you return that course approval form and syllabus to the GEO.

TRANSFERRING OF CREDITS: All credits taken abroad come back as transfer credits. Grades will be reflected on the transcript, but not figured into the student's cumulative GPA. Students must earn a 'C' or above for credits to transfer to Merrimack. Please note carefully that most of the courses taken abroad are only 3-credits rather than 4 as at Merrimack.

Toulouse HousingHOMESTAYS: Homestay Students live with homestay families in Toulouse to promote integration into the local culture and reinforce daily use of French.
MEALS: All meals are offered at the homestay on the weekend, and students typically eat breakfasts and dinners with their homestay families on the weekdays. Lunches during weekdays can be purchased at local cafes, restaurants, and markets throughout the city.
